A ribbon cutting event will be held at Sams House by the Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program at 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 21, 2010.  Two historic houses are located at 6195 North Tropical Trail on Merritt Island.

Friends of the Thousand Islands

The Friends of Ulumay and the Friends of the Thousand Islands have agreed to work together to build support for both sanctuaries.  Both boards of directors voted to extend reciprocal membership privileges to members of either organization.  During the next year, we hold our monthly meetings and presentations jointly - alternating between the Kiwanis Park and the Cocoa Beach Library.

Mark your calendar to attend Thousand Islands Day on October 2, 2010 from 10 A.M. until 3 P.M.  The event will be held on the Cocoa Beach Country Club property.  Stay tuned for more information.

Sykes Creek Adventures Family Eco-Festival

The Friends of Ulumay and Brevard Parks and Recreation worked together to provide the 2010 Sykes Creek Adventures festival at Kiwanis Island on February 20, 2010.  We greatly appreciate the efforts of the exhibitors, musicians, workshop  leaders, Dolphin Girl Cruises, Indian River Outfitters, Hook Kids on Fishing, Jungle Jim, Wildlife Care, our sponsors and vendors that made this event a success in 2010.  <click for more>

First Pepper Bust  - A Huge Success

Our volunteers plus two experienced workers from the Marine Resources Council and a vanload of inmates from the Brevard Correctional Institution removed enough Brazilian Pepper Trees to fill a large dump truck four times.  If you have not visited Ulumay since December 12, please drive along Old Audubon Road to see the open spaces that were previously covered with invasive exotic plants - mostly Brazilian Peppers.

Treasures from the Past

Sharon Dolan of Maple Street Natives loaned us some interesting documents from the history of Ulumay Wildlife Sanctuary.  Click to download the minutes from a 1991 meeting of the Ulumay Wildlife Sanctuary Committee.  Click to load Margaret Hames plant inventory from 1991.
